Name: Baffin (male)
Born: Winter of 2016/17 in the wild
Siblings: None known
Current location: Assiniboine Park Zoo, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada
History of captivity:
- Captured in Churchill, Manitoba November 2017
- Arrived at the Leatherdale International Polar Bear Conservation Centre, part of the Assiniboine Park Zoo on 6 December 2017
Baffin’s name was chosen through an online poll and is named for Baffin Island.
Apparently orphaned, it was decided that Baffin could not be rehabilitated and released back into the wild as he had become habituated to food taken from human garbage. Nevertheless, his transfer to Winnipeg, and that of an unrelated female cub (Willow), caused controversy in Churchill.
