Nanuq is an Inuit word for polar bear.
Nanuq, as she was subsequently named, was observed over a number of days wandering around the Churchill area without any sign of her mother. It was felt that she was unlikely to survive alone and so she was captured and subsequently transported to Assiniboine Park Zoo. The photograph below was taken at the Zoo when she arrived.
