Name: Siku (male)
Born: Winter of 2015/2016 in the wild
Siblings: None known
Current location: Assiniboine Park Zoo, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada
History of captivity:
- Captured in the wild near Churchill, Manitoba in 2016
- Arrived at the Leatherdale International Polar Bear Conservation Centre, part of the Assiniboine Park Zoo on 9 December 2016
Siku, as the cub was subsequently named (an Inuit name for ice), was observed over a number of days by conservation officers in the vicinity of Churchill. After unsuccessful attempts were made to connect him with female bears in the area, it was decided to capture the cub. At the time he weighed only 39kilogrammes (85 pounds).
2016 was a bad year for polar bears in the Churchill area with the sea ice forming very late, putting the bears under severe pressure.
