Bering was named after Vitus Jonassen Bering, also known as Ivan Ivanovich Bering, an explorer and officer in the Russian Navy (although Danish by birth).
When Bering was transferred to China from Russia he was flown to Frankfurt and then on to Beijing in a second aircraft. From there he was transferred to Dalian.
