Tim (male). Born in the wild on Wrangel Island, Russia in 1985
The zoo was founded in 1896 and has been exhibiting polar bears since 1925. As well as the single polar bear the Bear Pavilion also has brown bears and Ussuri black bears. The enclosures are separated from the public by moats which, when filled, provide swimming pools for the bears.
Facilities are outdated and the zoo has had financial problems in the past. A modernisation programme is in place but the polar bear enclosure is not likely to be updated in the lifetime of its present occupant who born in 1985.
Tim’s diet is listed on the zoo’s website as being mainly composed of meat, frozen fish and fish oil, supplemented with bread, porridge, vegetables and mineral supplements.
In the 1960’s polar bears were successfully bred in the zoo with Severyanka giving birth to 13 cubs who were dispersed to other zoos.
